Brazilian government to accelerate IoT services for ‘smart cities’ initiative

The Brazilian government has announced that it has defined its priority areas for the application of Internet of Things, as the public policies and legislation around the technologies begin to shape. Authorities have targeted smart cities, health and agriculture as the main target areas for digital transformation.

The topic of smart cities is a trend gathering momentum all over the world, and politicians in Brazil have expressed their desire to implement smart city initiatives, programs and projects that can drastically transform its cities.

The National Internet of Things plan released by the Brazilian government will also attempt to focus on specific segments of base industries such as (oil and gas) and manufacturing (textiles and automotive). These sectors were all identified due to their relevance and importance to the Brazilian economy, in terms of production and innovation.

The petroleum industry has traditionally been hoovered up by Middle East government IT expenditure, but figures released by Gartner suggest that there is a shift away from the norm in new areas.

A spokesman for the Brazilian National IoT plan, disclosed that the definition of the priorities were made by following criteria that focused on supply, demand and the development capacity of each segment. In addition to this - it was revealed that international case studies, which examined public consultations and the findings of field experts, were also used to define the areas by the committee.

The IoT study was conducted by Brazil's National Development Bank (BNDES) and was conducted by a consortium led by consulting firm McKinsey. The government has declared that the primary objective of the IoT plan is to help accelerate the development of these technologies to sustain the development of Brazilian society, which will increase the competitiveness of the economy and this will strengthen national productivity and enhance the lives of its residents.
