Japan’s Seven Bank launches facial recognition system in ATMs

Japan’s Seven Bank has recently partnered with NEC to introduce ATMs that implement facial recognition into their systems, incorporating biometric authentication along with a QR code scanner. This new system would not only allow banks to identify its customers, but also allow people to open bank accounts on the spot.

As of now, any individual wishing to open a bank account must provide an identification document copy like a driver’s license or national ID.

Additionally, a representative of Seven Bank said that the company is even contemplating offering to open new accounts using the ATMs for different regional as well as online banks.

Seven Bank already has more than 24,000 ATMs located at most convenient stores, public areas and other locations nationwide. It is now expected that thousands more will be installed in most major Japanese cities by 2020.
