New Zealand demonstrates its commitment to smart energy by lighting up iconic bridge

New Zealand's capital city Auckland has lit-up its iconic Harbour Bridge in an attempt to showcase its progressive approach towards finding smarter ways to power the city.

Thousands of people turned out to watch Vector Lights bring Auckland's famous landmark to life in what has been described as a world-first solar, battery and peer-to-peer powered light show. Vector Lights is part of a smart energy collaboration created between New-Zealand-based energy provider Vector and Auckland City Council formed in conjunction with the New Zealand transportation agency.

The dazzling display lasted for six minutes and the specially-composed sequence wowed those in attendance - with the spectacular lighting effects representing the dawn of a new era for the city in relation to smart energy.

Mayor of Auckland Phi Goff was joined by New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern and stated that the solar energy on display at Auckland bridge reiterated the city's commitment to ensuring it reduces carbon emissions in order to make the city a better place for its residents to live in.

He said, "Vector Lights has given us another platform from which to celebrate and the use of solar power reflects our commitment to reducing our carbon emissions. Lighting up Auckland's iconic harbour bridge in such a creative and exciting way adds new vibrancy and excitement to our city."

It has been disclosed that the renewable energy used to light up the bridge was stored through 630 solar panels. Each of the 90,000 LEDs added to the bridge can be individually programmed which allows an infinite array of design and effects. In addition to this, it has been claimed that 58 year-old bridge will be used to further enhance its appeal as a major tourist attraction for visitors in the capital city, whilst it can also be used to celebrate major events in the country.

Vector CEO, Simon Mackenzie has claimed that the project vindicates Auckland's claim that it is a progressive and technology-focused city, and added its approach to new energy solutions will make it a world-leading smart city.

He said, "Vector Lights reflects Auckland's position as a future-thinking city. We will be an evolving showcase of new energy solutions that help illustrate what a more sustainable energy future can look like. Vector Lights not only showcases what is possible from an energy perspective, it will contribute to Auckland's allure as a destination and a modern, future-focused community."
