By 2029, Croatia is poised to integrate electricity smart meters in all households, modernizing energy consumption management across the country.
HEP (Hrvatska Elektroprivreda), Croatia’s state energy company, is investing €86.5 million (USD 95.6 million) in smart meters, which will allow monthly invoices based on actual energy consumption and six-monthly calculations.
Commenting on the new smart meter installation, Duja Grgat of Elektrodalmacija Split stated, “What happens is we briefly disconnect the building and then change people’s meters. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes per unit”
Currently, 36% of electricity meters across Croatia have been upgraded to smart meter technology, with Elektrodalmacija leading regional efforts by completing smart meter installations in 40% of households within its service territory.
Consumers will not bear any additional costs for the technological upgrade, provided they maintain timely bill payments.
Ivo Babić, Assistant Director of Elektrodalmacija Split, highlighted, “For us, this affects the rationalization of our business, reducing losses in the network and making it easier to find possible thefts in the system.”
The smart meter rollout represents Croatia’s significant stride towards modernizing energy infrastructure, enhancing service quality and accurate energy tracking for households across the country.
