Helsinki named as global urban mobility leader

The Finnish capital of Helsinki has been named as the city best equipped for the integration of mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) platforms.

The MaaS platforms are being projected to replace more than 2.3 billion urban private car journeys annually by 2023, according to comprehensive new research compiled by Juniper.

Juniper has also surveyed and ranked the cities best prepared for the integration of large-scale MaaS service deployment, and Helsinki comes out on top.

Multi-modal transport:
MaaS is a mobility system that integrates multi-modal transport services, including buses, taxis, rail and metro, offering compelling on-demand services, resulting in transportation modal shifts.
The research report by Juniper is entitled 'Mobility-as-a-Service: Emerging Opportunities, Vendor Strategies & Market Forecasts 2018-2023 also the report also found that West Europe will lead MaaS adoption, accounting for 83 per cent of global MaaS trips in 2023.

Juniper also highlighted that the success of public-private partnerships, the high quality of transport service provision - and positive trial outcomes are major factors for traction in Europe.
Conversely, the research and analytical services provider forecast that the growth of MaaS in the US will be slower, given the highly-fragmented nature of the state and federal system, coupled with lukewarm legislative support for regulating a 'free market'.

Juniper also ranked 15 world cities based on their readiness for large-scale MaaS service deployment. Metrics considered included the existing/planned stage of deployment, cohesion of public transport services and infrastructure development.

The top 5 ranked cities were:

  1. Helsinki
  2. Stockholm
  3. Vienna
  4. Amsterdam
  5. Austin

"Helsinki has achieved its winning position in MaaS driven by collaboration between government and MaaS vendors," said Nick Maynard, research analyst at Juniper Research, and report author.
"Stakeholder partnerships are fundamental to MaaS in order to develop a viable multi-modal system delivering significant cost- and time-savings to the user."
