UK’s first electric forecourt prepares for November launch

In an effort to further the use of electric car usage as a mode of transport, two eco-companies in the UK have joined forces to deliver high-powered electric vehicle charging forecourts.

The two companies, SportsArt and Gridserve, expect to complete the construction of the forecourt this month. The forecourt, located in Essex, will be the first of over 100 (already planned) sites to be built by Gridserve within the next five years.

The partners have stated that they plan to offer the sort of convenience and amenities that a petrol station would have, to allow for electric vehicle drivers to charge their vehicle in “all-new ways”.

The forecourt will initially have 30 rapid car chargers. ABB will then provide 24 more to cater to all electric vehicle models.

EVP of SportsArt, Ruben Mejia, said, “We’re excited to be a part of this progressive partnership with Gridserve. SportsArt’s mission is to deliver sustainable and eco-friendly options; the Electric Forecourt is a prime example of an innovative opportunity that will bring these alternatives to an entire community.”

Toddington Harper, founder and CEO of Gridserve, said, “Partnering with SportsArt forms a key part of our mission to support education initiatives, helping people to understand more about energy, and how clean energy can help contribute towards healthy and more sustainable lifestyles.”

Adding that: “This fully-loaded customer experience will cater to a range of consumer and driver needs.”

The Electric Forecourt will offer electric charging stations to cater for 36 electric vehicles that can deliver up to 350kW of charging power within 30 minutes; a designated spot for non-electric vehicle drivers; retail spaces for supermarkets and coffee shops; as well as a lounge with high-speed Wi-Fi, among others.
