The Middle East's first operational driverless bus was launched in Ajman, operating on a three-kilometer radius within Corniche and equipped with high-performing sensors and 14 cameras that can detect pedestrian crossings and traffic signals.
Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, director of Ajman’s municipality and planning department and Omar Al Olama, minister of state for digital economy, AI and remote working system, were among the passengers for the smart bus’ first journey.
The bus can accommodate 15 passengers – 11 seated and four standing – and is managed by an on-board AI system.
During its inauguration, Al Nuaimi and Al Olama are joined by the CEO of the Emirates Telecommunications Corporation, Masoud Mohammed Sharif, and the advisor to the CEO and the director general of Etisalat in the Northern Emirates, Abdulaziz Taryam.
Ion, a joint venture between Bee’ah and Crescent Enterprises, further developed the self-driving vehicle that is produced by a French company. Before its official run, the new smart transportation mode was tested in Masdar City.
