Charlotte, North Carolina Advances Construction of First All-Electric Firehouse

Charlotte All-Electric Firehouse

Charlotte, North Carolina, is making remarkable progress in the construction of its innovative all-electric firehouse, Firehouse 30, accelerating sustainability and regional emergency responses.

Located at 3019 Beam Road, this USD 16.39 million project is set to replace the temporary structure originally built in 1955 and address the growing demands of the Bram Road and Charlotte Douglas International Airport areas.

Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson highlighted, “This project represents our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and ensuring the safety of Charlotte’s residents and visitors. Firehouse 30 is more than just a facility; it is a beacon of progress and preparedness for our community.”

Firehouse 30 – A Sustainability Model

Designed for sustainability, Firehouse 30’s full electric features align with Charlotte’s broader sustainable goals to transition to zero-carbon sources by 2030.

The facility is set to host the Southeast’s first all-electric North American-style fire engine, further solidifying the city’s leading position in adopting green technologies.

The two-story, 14,000-square-foot firehouse will feature three bays for fire apparatus, modern living quarters for firefighters, and a modern catwalk for improved safety and operational efficiency.

The building’s design also blends modern innovation with traditional elements, incorporating a brick-and-bronze exterior that honors the firefighting history.

Strategic Location

Situated on a three-acre site directly across the Police and Fire Training Academy, the new firehouse is positioned strategically to optimize emergency response times.

The location will improve Charlotte Fire Department’s ability to manage high call volumes around the area, including those generated by airport operations.

Currently under construction, the new firehouse is on track to be completed by December 2025. Johnson highlighted that replacing the temporary structure with the all-electric facility will meet the current and future demands in the area.

“This firehouse will serve as a model for other cities looking to invest in sustainable and effective emergency response in infrastructure,” Johnson stated.

As part of the Charlotte Fire Department Facilities Master Plan, this state-of-the-art project reflects Charlotte’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and safety of its residents and visitors.
