Connecticut to Deploy Lamppost EV Charging Solutions

Connecticut

Connecticut is set to deploy innovative lamppost electric vehicle (EV) chargers, a significant move toward its electrification goals.

Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) has selected Voltpost, a lamppost EV charging company, to integrate modular lamppost retrofit EV charging platforms across the state.

The 18-month pilot will test the viability of Voltpost’s charging platform in areas serviced by two major regional electric distribution companies, Eversource and United Illuminating (UI). Despite a mandate requiring all fleet vehicles purchased by state agencies to be electric by 2030, only 1.2% of registered vehicles are currently electric in Connecticut.

The state requires an additional 1,500 charging ports by 2025 to meet the increasing demand for EV charging platforms. Voltpost’s solution aims to significantly reduce the cost, timing, and footprint of EV charger deployment, with the Level 2 network enabling EVs to shift from petrol to electric.

Jeff Prosserman, CEO and Co-Founder of Voltpost, highlighted, “This deployment will expand access to EV chargers for the people of Connecticut, boosting EV adoption and supporting the state’s transition to a renewable energy-based transportation system.”

Prosserman added that the initiative is a key milestone in Voltpost’s mission to decarbonize the planet by democratizing access to EV charging infrastructure.

The project will install 50 charging stations, with a total of 100 charging ports, to deliver seamless and reliable public charging experiences to EV drivers. Additionally, Voltpost will collaborate with UI, Capitol Clean Cities of Connecticut, and Live Green Connecticut to ensure community involvement in the site selection process.

Sean Sullivan, Director of Clean Energy Policy at Avangrid, UI’s parent company, stated, “Expanding EV charging infrastructure is a key step toward building a greener and more sustainable future for the communities we serve. Our collaboration with Voltpost underscores our commitment to innovative solutions that make EV adoption more convenient, equitable, and impactful, helping to reduce emissions and improve quality of life across the state.”

To reduce around 200 metric tons of carbon per year, approximately 20% of the unit will be deployed in disadvantaged and low-income communities. Furthermore, Voltpost plans to support local job creation by allowing Connecticut-based minority and women-owned business enterprises to facilitate the installation.

Set for completion by Q4 2026, the initiative aims to address Connecticut’s pressing need for expanded EV charging infrastructure, advancing its journey toward a more sustainable transportation future.
