Abu Dhabi launches first of its kind genome program to improve healthcare

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Health (DoH) has launched an initiative which aims to improve healthcare and health management in the UAE capital through the use of large-scale genomic data.

According to the DoH, the program will be achieved through the use of advanced sequencing technology and a supercomputer which will be placed in Abu Dhabi where it will analyze data and generate useful insights.

This first of its kind program aims to give Emirati citizens their very own specific genome as a baseline. This, along with the genomic data which will be generated will enable greater insight into how healthcare management can be improved within the city.

Chairman of Abu Dhabi DoH, Sheikh Abudulla Bin Mohamed Al Hamed, stated, “Embracing innovation and providing a comprehensive healthcare program in the emirate of Abu Dhabi remains at the forefront of our priorities. Two of the world’s most exciting technologies – DNA sequencing and Artificial Intelligence (AI) – will come together in this project.”

He added, "The Genome Program will enhance our knowledge of citizen’s genomes and establish a strong foundation of health and well-being.”
